We invite Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partnerships from the corporate sector, in line with the guidelines set forth by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India. Your support will enable us to provide free knowledge services to farmers across India, focusing primarily on weather intelligence and agricultural advisories.
Brief outline of Kisan Sanchar activities under CSR
Weather specially rain significantly impacts farmers, as their entire agricultural process, from planning and planting to harvesting and storage is closely tied to weather conditions. Favourable weather can lead to high returns, whereas adverse conditions, such as excessive rain, hailstorms, droughts, or strong winds, can devastate crops, preventing farmers from covering their investment costs. This has led to tragic outcomes, including suicides among farmers who have faced crop destruction.
The livelihoods of farm labourers, their families, and artisans also hinge on the prosperity of the farming sector. Economic downturns in agriculture not only affect farmers but also result in hardship for labourers and artisans, forcing many to relocate in search of work. This migration disrupts their personal and social lives and interferes with their children’s education.
Despite the Indian Government’s considerable investment through the Indian Meteorological Department in generating relevant weather forecasts and advisories, this effort falls short if the information fails to reach farmers in a timely and accessible manner. Without these insights, farmers are unable to make informed decisions about their crops, undermining the value of such intelligence.
Farmers employ various irrigation methods, including Canal Irrigation and utilizing ground water through Diesel and Electric pumps. Each approach entails specific costs. However, excessive irrigation can lead to crop damage if unexpected rainfall occurs. Furthermore, if rain follows the application of costly chemical inputs, it renders the investment futile, resulting in economic losses.
The cornerstone for making informed decisions in agriculture and animal husbandry operations lies in weather intelligence. While modern technology enables the generation of weather insights, the challenge remains in promptly delivering this information to farmers, coupled with locally relevant agricultural advisories.
Recognizing this issue, Kisan Sanchar has been actively addressing it since 2015. In collaboration with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an arrangement was established in 2015. Under this arrangement, IMD provides weather intelligence, and Kisan Sanchar ensures its timely dissemination to farmers via mobile phone technology.
In 2015, Kisan Sanchar initiated the dissemination of rain alerts to farmers via text SMS. Subsequently, Voice Messaging Services were incorporated into their communication channels. Then, in 2021, Kisan Sanchar introduced a two-way messaging system on WhatsApp, further enhancing their outreach and engagement with farmers.
In the year 2017-18, Kisan Sanchar collaborated with the Wingify Foundation based in New Delhi to provide weather intelligence services to 7149 willing farmers in selected areas of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. In year 2018-19 a comprehensive study was conducted on farmer beneficiaries. The study aimed to evaluate the economic ramifications of weather intelligence services, particularly focusing on Rain Alerts.
Through in-depth interviews with 1000 farmers, it was revealed that the verification of a single Rain Alert led to an average savings of Rs. 600 per acre for farmers in irrigation costs. Furthermore, the economic losses mitigated as a result of timely alerts regarding rainfall contributed additional savings for the farmers.
This noteworthy project earned the Wingify Software Private Limited the esteemed National CSR Award in 2020. The accolade was officially announced on August 18, 2022.
